It can be seen that there was some sort of cover over the stern section, which has a raised gunwale. It is thought that some of the trading boats were so shaped to retain coal when being hauled up the inclines.

When the boat was excavated there was a small amount
of puddle clay in the open section, with a golf ball partly buried in it!.
